  • Description: "The purpose of this sourcebook is to revisit and update conceptualizations of informal and incidental learning and to draw out implications for adult learning theory, research, and practice. The importance of informal and incidental learning is widely recognized by adult educators today in light of renewed focus on, and interpretation of, lifelong learning for coping and succeeding in a rapidly changing world. Early conceptualizations of informal and incidental learning emphasized individual agency. While the environment could be seen as imposing barriers and providing supports to learning--if the social context was taken into consideration at all--learning itself was centered on how individual adults personally gained new knowledge and skill in their lives and work. In this issue, authors examine the intertwined learning of individuals with and through the learning of the social units in which they are embedded. Authors reconceptualize informal and incidental learning in light of relearning, which demands constant adaptation and in-the-moment innovation within a context that includes the collaborators involved. Learning occurs on multiple levels (individual, collective, team, organization. society) and across multiple planes (crossing functional and role boundaries, disciplines, and lines of authority), as people learn and grow interactively within social context"--Editors' Notes.
