  • Description: Examines new French museums' significance in terms of differing European political cultures & colonial relationships & the historical contexts in which they were created. Focus is on two museums in metropolitan France & two in former colonies -- in the Overseas departments & territories of France -- all of which have a focus on European peoples & cultures & an engagement with universalism, diversity, difference, & race. These four museums are seen to demonstrate the highly contested & politicized character of efforts to represent non-European cultures since decolonization, with reassessment or revalorization of non-European cultural production at stake, along with a consideration of the sociopolitical issues rooted in difference.
